Achilles

Achilles was the leader of fifty ships manned with Myrmidons, the famous warriors from Fthia. He dominated the action from the very first moment the Achaeans set foot on the beaches of Troy. Very soon after the arrival he killed the son of Poseidon Cycnus and forced the Trojans to retreat in the city. During the first nine years of war he sacked eleven cities around Troy and twelve in the nearby islands. It was then that Achilles captured Briseis and Agamemnon Chryseis.

When Agamemnon lost Chryseis and snatched Briseis, Achilles' anger and wounded pride made him abandon the expedition and refuse the exhortations to join the Achaeans again.

Following the withdrawal of Achilles, the situation became desperate for the Achaeans. Countless heroes were lost and the presence of Achilles in the battlefield became more necessary than ever.

The ambassadors who visited Achilles' tent offering him total acceptance of his requests, left empty-handed. Initially the hero stated that he would return to Fthia as soon as possible, but then he somewhat changed his mind by saying that he would take up arms only to defend his ship from arson.
