Built at an
altitude of 160
m at the northern foot of Mt Narthakios,
Farsala
is located in the southern part of the Prefecture
of Larissa. The region has been continuously
inhabited since the Neolithic Period, making
Farsala well known during antiquity.
The county
of Farsala is one of the 5 counties of the
Prefecture of Larissa.
|
|
| |
It stretches across
the south-western part of the Prefecture and it
is mainly flat. It neighbors the Prefectures of
Fthiotida, Magnesia and Karditsa. It is the seat
of the homonymous Municipality and with its 15.000
residents, it constitutes a productive
and commercial centre. The settlements of Ryzi,
Stathmos and Chaidaria all come under Farsala.
The entire central part of the county is crossed
by the river Enipeas
and its tributaries, creating a fertile plain.
In the north-east and the south-east one can find
low mountains, reaching a maximum altitude of
1.514 m on the
peak Grivas.

The vaulted tomb
The vaulted tomb and its road were constructed
at the end of the 6th
century BC
and have been continuously used until the Hellenistic
Period. Constructed according to the polygonal
system, the built yard of the tomb is still salvaged
today.
A black-figure calyx
krater found inside the tomb is attributed
to the workshop of the vase-painter Exekias. It
bears a representation of the battle between the
Greeks and the Trojans over the body of Patroclus.
A Mycenaean chamber
tomb was found under the vaulted tomb.
The tomb was excavated by N. Verdelis in the years
between 1951-1956.

The site of
the tomb is enclosed and can be visited after
arrangements with the Guard of Antiquities of
Farsala.
Nymphaio
It can be found at the
location "Karapla", 1 km away
from the city of Farsala. It is a huge
cave, which used to be the sanctuary of
the Nymphs and Pan. Its findings date from the
6th century BC.
Kynos
Kefales
This significant historical location can be found
close to the village
Thetidio. The Thessalians and the Voiotians
fought at this location against Alexander of Ferrai
in 364 BC. Led
by Philip the Fifth, the Macedonians fought against
the Romans in 197 BC. The defeat of Philip marked
the beginning of the Roman domination in the Greek
dominion.
Farsalos, Palaiofarsalos, Eretria and Skotousa
were some of the ancient cities of modern Farsala
county.

| "Halva
of Farsala" |
| |
Farsala is renowned
for the production of a local kind of buttery
halva (sapoune), whose taste is attributed
not only to artistry, but also to local water.
This rich, semi-transparent kind
of halva is made of rice flour. It also has a
crunchy crust made of burnt sugar.
