Troy - The movie

Directed by Wolfgang Petersen and based on a screenplay by David Benioff, the most important epic poem of all times, Homer's Iliad, was adapted for the big screen in 2004 through an impressive Hollywood production titled "TROY".

The plot

Achilles in battle

In the movie, the prince of Troy Paris abducts "Helen of Troy", the wife of the King of Sparta Menelaus and starts the war between the two peoples.

The entire Greek army, Achilles (Brad Pitt) included, heads to Troy, which places all its hopes on the brother of Paris Hector.

A bloody siege starts, which will last for more than ten years. The siege will not be over until the moment Ulysses offers the victory to the Greeks through one of the most ingenious ways in history, the Trojan Horse.

Even though there has been a lot of criticism to the extent that the movie renders faithfully the story of the Trojan War, the ancient text is more or less respected in the portrayal of Achilles.

Achilles is one of the protagonists of the story and he is portrayed as a fearless warrior, leading the Greeks in the battlefield and from there to victory.

The shooting
The scenes of the city of Troy necessitated the construction of a city stretching across 4 hectares. 140 tons of plaster were used for the construction of the city of Troy, a quantity which surpasses the quantities used for both the Gladiator and Harry Potter.

The shooting of the movie started in a studio in London, it continued in Malta, where many scenes were shot on location and was completed in Mexico. Kilometers of coastline substituted the coast of Asia Minor, to which the Greeks arrived and subsequently camped.

Approximately 1.000 to 2.000 supernumeraries, who fought following the directions of choreographers were used in the battle scenes. Following that, modern electronic means were used for their digital multiplication and created the army of 70.000 warriors presented in the movie.
